Note
Joan was working in Halifax before the war (between school and the war) at Whiteley's Sewing. So, Geoff Slater says that she was living with parents in Sep 39 (but isn't on the 39 Register) |
Note
Joan served on the Isle of Man with the ATS monitoring enemy signals traffic during WWII. It appears that ATS Special Radio Operators were trained on the Isle of Man and that Joan would have been deployed elsewhere after the 5-month training. Training included receiving Morse code (not sending), German field radio procedures and basic radio/electronics. I am unsure where Joan served after training, though it is likely that she monitored German encrypted signals traffic, sent as groups of 5 characters. This encrypted signals traffic would be sent by dispatch rider to Bletchley Park (Station X) for potential decryption and analysis by Allied Intelligence. I was delighted to find that when I was about 15 years old and learning Morse code myself (for an amateur radio licence) Joan could still remember her Morse training. I remember Joan told me very little about why she knew Morse, and only when I later read about Bletchley Park and the secrecy involved did I understand why. |
